Phone Call Safety for Kids
Sometimes the phone rings and it’s not someone you know. Here’s what to do to stay safe:
- Don’t answer the phone unless you’re allowed to.
- If you don’t recognize the voice, don’t talk — go get an adult right away.
- If you do answer, never say you’re home alone or give out your name, address, or school.
- Remember: Real friends and family already know your name, and so do grown-ups like your teacher or caregiver.
- If something feels weird or scary, hang up and tell a trusted adult.

If you’re babysitting, here are a few extra steps to keep everyone safe:
- Before the parents leave, ask them:
“Is anyone going to call? Should I answer the phone?”
(This is the easiest and best way to stay safe.) - If you need to call the parents, make sure you have their phone number written down or saved. You can also use tools like FaceTime if needed.
- Always keep the doors locked when you’re babysitting or home alone.
(This keeps little kids from wandering outside and keeps strangers from walking in.) - If you need to take a message:
- Politely ask the caller to spell their name and give their phone number.
- Repeat it back to them to show you wrote it down carefully.
- This shows that you are not a little kid anymore — you’re a responsible babysitter!
